Compliance of Smoke Alarms
Installation & Connection
Landlords must ensure that at least one smoke alarm is installed in a hallway outside a bedroom, or another suitable location, on each storey of a rented home. Smoke alarms (including heat alarms) must be working and cannot be removed or disabled. Where the dwelling was constructed after 1 May 2014 and there is more than one alarm in the property, smoke alarms must be mains-powered and interconnected.
Maintenance requirements for smoke alarms
Landlords must ensure smoke alarms are tested and checked annually, and must install or replace removable batteries every year (or, for lithium batteries, within the period specified by the manufacturer). Tenants must be given at least two business days' notice to inspect or assess the need for a smoke alarm repair or replacement. Landlords must replace any non-working alarm within two days of receiving notice, use a licensed electrician to repair a hard-wired smoke alarm, and ensure smoke alarms are replaced within 10 years of their manufacture date (or earlier if specified by the manufacturer).

Mandatory requirements to follow
Electrical requirements
Safety switches have been mandatory on all new power point circuits since 1991 and on all new lighting circuits since 2000. Only a licensed electrician can carry out electrical installation work, and the electrician must provide a uniquely numbered certificate of compliance for the electrical work.
Tenancy rights and requirements
The landlord or agent must confirm on the Entry Condition Report whether the safety switch is functioning; this is done through testing. If a safety switch is not working, or detects an electrical fault during the tenancy, this is classified as an urgent repair.

Installation & Labelling
Installation requirements
Corded blinds and curtains must be installed so that a loose cord cannot form a loop 220mm or longer at or less than 1,600mm above floor level. Blinds and curtains must be installed in accordance with the installation instructions on any retail packaging. A cleat used to secure a cord must be installed at least 1,600mm above floor level.
Labelling requirements
The person installing a corded blind or curtain must attach a label with the name and contact details of the person or company responsible for the installation. Warning labels or swing tags supplied with the corded blinds or curtains must not be removed.

Toilets must be minimum 3 star WELS dual flush (from 23 March 2025).
